Some Unix distros are open source, such as Free BSD, Sun Solaris 10 ect.. With this said I would not recomend them for the newb. Go with Linux.

This depends on what you mean by better! Solaris is Unix, If you want a desktop OS go with linux. If you want a powerful server, development distro. Try Solaris.

Is that an AMD 64 you are running? If so that could be your problem. When you say Red Hat do you mean Red Hat or Fedora?

This all depends on what you are learning. Are you learning to be an End User or a Root Super User. An EndUser, go with Fedora! System Admin or Root User's will usally steer clear of using the Fedora projects for Production systems. Just not stable enough in my opinion. But a great thing for the...
