Hey mate I had the same problem as you, I managed to get the HS attactched properly in the end though, you just have to use a LOT of force to get all 4 pins to click through the mobo
Certainly the X1800XT, I just got one and it can run everything at max settings including F.E.A.R., BF2, Half Life 2 etc.

You may want to buy a small raptor (36gb) and put your OS and thing you want to load fast such a games. Then you can use your old HD to store other things such as music
