Right click on yourself and see if "Show Desktop Icons" is checked. If not, click it. That happens a lot to people... Also, yeah, check for spyware... that could also be the cause.

You can get XP Pro at Best Buy, Staples, basically any place where they sell computer things. You can also buy it online; it would probably be cheaper that way.

Looks like a problem with IE itself. You can try repairing XP. That might work.
