You probably didn't change the timeout value. When you set it to a value of -1, the PC will boot straight up w/out displaying the menu; when you set it to 0, it will display it for a split second and boot straight into Win2K/XP. Just to be on the safe side, if I were you, I would make a backup...

First remove the hidden & read-only attribute from the file. Then open up the boot.ini file w/ the Notepad. Delete everything after the [boot loader] timeout=-1 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS Change the timeout value from 30 to -1. Save and close Notepad...

Check in your BIOS to make sure the new drive is detected properly. If it does not, double check your jumper settings. Some drives - if it's the only drive on the IDE cable - require a specific jumper setting.

Compaq systems are extremely proprietary and thus make upgrading difficult. Even the MBs they use in their case is very non-standard and I doubt that any standard ATX MB will fit inside that Comcrap. Your best bet is to save your money and build a new PC.

Defragging your HDD has NOTHING to do with compressing your files. All it does it take fragmented files and places them in adjacent clusters so that your HDD takes less time retrieving the data.

With ANY anti-virus program out there, you need to update your virus definitions on a regular basis - atleast 1x a week. If you're asking for updating the program itslef - that's a different story. In 1999, McAfee was putting some horrible stuff... the real time virus scanning was very poor...
