Thanks for the information. After much effort, I finally was able to connect to the internet. I rebooted several times and not sure what was going on. I'll review your recommendations further and see if I can figure things out.

I installed Linux Ubuntu as a virtual machine on windows 10. I installed Ubuntu 18.04 using hyper v. I am unable to establish internet connection. A message states that a network cable is not connected which is incorrect. Any ideas? The windows 10 has a Ethernet connection that is working fine.

Thanks for the advice. I'm primarily working with Ubuntu now. Will explore Kali later. I do have it up and running. All for fun and learning. The only one I'll be snooping on is myself. I'm retired and have a lot of time to play.

I was able to figure it out and it's up and running as a virtual machine. I switched computers and was able to download it. Thanks for your help.

I have recently had trouble with downloading. They start out okay but then stall. Most recently tried downloading Ubuntu Linux. It stopped after 18% completed. They're other cases. Could this be malware related? Any suggestions?

After a great deal of effort I was able to install kali Linux from a cd that I purchased. It will not accept the password that I set during setup. I have verified that the password is correct. Suggestions?
