I would not convert from one lossy format to another. The result will end up worse than the MP3 files you started with.

What these tests in the links I have posted, as well as my personal test have proven to me, is that AAC is poor for orchestra music. I have already listened to both, and I do not need to again. If you read that link above, you would find that AAC was the worst out of all the formats tested...

Vorbis aoTuV beta 4 shows superior to the most popular lossy codecs in this listening test as well as this one. These are all of the latest codecs, which include all variants of AAC.

You can test the real-world specs of your audio interface with a free and popular utility called RightMark. You can get it here. You'll just need a cable to plug the line-out to the line-in to run a loop-back test.
